Before a deployment in 2019, Air Force Technical Sergeant Charles Cornacchio paid Billerica-based Father & Son Moving & Storage for moving and six months’ storage of his belongings. Months later, while serving in Qatar, Cornacchio learned that Father & Son had auctioned off the contents of his storage unit, including all of his furniture and appliances and priceless personal possessions including mementos from Cornacchio’s cousin, a Green Beret killed in Afghanistan in 2013; his grandfather’s Korean War medals; and a dresser handcrafted by his great-grandfather.
Thanks to tenacious work by the Department of Justice, which filed a lawsuit against Father & Son Moving & Storage, the company agreed to pay $60,000 to Cornacchio as part of a settlement related to the company’s violation of the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which offers protections for servicemembers on active duty. Unfortunately, despite significant effort, Cornacchio hasn’t been able to recover his belongings.
Cornacchio was represented by Jack Regan, a senior fellow in LSC’s Veterans Legal Clinic.
