Podcast: ABA Journal’s ‘Modern Law Library’ Highlights Discharge Upgrade Manual

Want to change a veteran’s life through pro bono? There’s a manual for that
October 20, 2021

The ABA Journal’s podcast, Modern Law Library, recently highlighted the Military Discharge Upgrade Legal Practice Manual, a new resource written by attorneys from the Legal Services Center of Harvard Law School’s Veterans Legal Clinic and Connecticut Veterans Legal Center.

The manual is a comprehensive guide to representing veterans with less-than-honorable or otherwise stigmatizing discharges before military review boards. This landmark publication—the first of its kind in 30 years—serves as a desktop reference for anyone interested in advocating for veterans, restoring honor to those who have served, and opening doors to life-altering support.

From Modern Law Library: Dana Montalto, Attorney and Clinical Instructor in LSC’s Veterans Legal Clinic and a co-author of the manual, shares how she became involved in veterans legal services, answers some common questions lawyers have when considering pro bono work in this area, and talks about the many people and organizations who took part in the yearslong process of creating this resource.
